How to Set Up an eSIM on Apple Watch

Date

An eSIM allows your Apple Watch to stay connected to cellular networks without your iPhone nearby. Here’s how to set it up:

Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • An Apple Watch Series 3 or later (GPS + Cellular model)
  • An iPhone 6s or later with the latest iOS version
  • A wireless carrier that supports Apple Watch cellular service
  • Your iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier (in most countries)

Setup Steps

1. Check Compatibility with Your Carrier

Contact your wireless carrier to confirm they support Apple Watch cellular service and understand any additional fees. Most carriers charge a monthly fee to add your watch to your plan.

2. Set Up During Initial Watch Setup

If you’re setting up a new Apple Watch:

  • During the setup process, look for the option to set up cellular
  • Tap “Set Up Cellular” when prompted
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to add your watch to your carrier plan
  • You may need to contact your carrier or use their app to complete activation

3. Set Up After Initial Setup

If your watch is already set up:

  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone
  • Tap the My Watch tab at the bottom
  • Tap Cellular
  • Tap Set Up Cellular
  • Follow the onscreen instructions
  • If prompted, enter information from your carrier or contact them to complete setup

4. Complete Carrier Activation

Depending on your carrier, you may need to:

  • Download and sign in to your carrier’s app
  • Call your carrier’s customer service
  • Visit your carrier’s website
  • The activation process varies by carrier and may take a few minutes to an hour

5. Verify Your Connection

Once setup is complete:

  • Look for the green dot or cellular signal bars on your watch face
  • Open Control Center on your watch (swipe up from the bottom) and check for the cellular icon
  • Try making a call or sending a message without your iPhone nearby to test the connection

Troubleshooting Tips

No cellular option appears: Your Apple Watch may not be a cellular model, or cellular service may not be available in your region.

Activation fails: Contact your carrier directly for assistance, as they control the activation process.

Weak or no signal: Make sure you’re in an area with carrier coverage and that your cellular plan is active.

Remove and re-add: If issues persist, go to Watch app > Cellular > Remove Plan, then set up cellular again.

Managing Your Cellular Plan

To manage your plan later:

  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone
  • Go to My Watch > Cellular
  • Here you can view your plan details, add a new plan, or remove your current plan

Your Apple Watch is now ready to use cellular features independently of your iPhone, allowing you to make calls, send messages, stream music, and use apps while leaving your phone at home.
